Getting braces is a great decision and it means you’re well on your way to a healthy, attractive smile! Just remember that the better care you take of your braces, the sooner you can finish your treatment and have a beautiful, straight smile! We’ve put together five easy tips to remember to make your treatment more comfortable and ensure you’re caring for your teeth while wearing braces.
1. Keep Your Braces Clean
Brush, brush, brush! Even if your teeth are perfectly straight, having yellow or spotty teeth can make your smile look terrible! Brush your teeth as regularly as possible – if you can’t brush your teeth after every meal, at least brush your braces twice a day. Food has a tendency of getting stuck in braces, so try to brush and floss after every meal to remove any remaining food. Use a floss threader and thread the floss carefully through the wires. Applying too much force can cause breakage, so proceed gently! Rinse daily with a fluoride rinse and keep an extra toothbrush handy at school or work, just in case!
2. Follow Instructions
Following your treatment instructions is the best way to shorten treatment time. Wear your rubber bands, change them when instructed, and show up for every appointment. Following instructions closely will not only have your braces off in no time, but you’ll get the best results from your treatment. If you don’t completely understand some of the instructions, just give us a call! We’re here to help.
3. Avoid Certain Foods
Even though these foods may be delicious, they’ll cause harm to your teeth in the long run. A good way to judge if a food will damage your braces is to think – is the food sticky or chewy? Chewy and sticky foods like gummies and caramels will cause your brackets to loosen. Crunchy foods like popcorn also have a way of slipping in and snapping wires, so stick to soft chocolate at the movies! Harder foods like pizza crust and chips can also put you at risk of damaging your braces. As much as you love some of these foods, inevitably they will make wearing braces a more painful process. You can wait until your braces are removed and then treat yourself! If you’d like a more comprehensive list, ask your orthodontist for more information and we’ll be happy to provide one.
4. Fix Any Breaks
Even the most cautious braces wearer can encounter breaks. As soon as you think something isn’t right with your braces, give DaBell Orthodontics a call at 509.921.1700 and we’ll get you in as soon as possible. The sooner you fix any issues, the less damage will be caused. Even if you’re not sure if anything is really wrong, checking with your orthodontist will give you peace of mind. Don’t hesitate to give us a call if you think anything is wrong.
To avoid more breakage, wear a mouth guard whenever you participate in any type of sport. Even if it’s not a heavy contact sport, accidents can happen! Better safe and smiling than sorry! Wearing a mouth guard will help protect your teeth and mouth from any injuries.
5. Make Regular Appointments
Make sure you try your best to keep your regularly scheduled appointments. We know you want your braces off as soon as possible, so coming in for every appointment is crucial. Missing appointments will inevitably extend the length of your treatment!
Following these tips will help you maximize the effectiveness of your treatment and ensure you’re caring for your teeth. We can’t wait to see your new smile!
