Common Symptoms of TMJ Disorder
There are many potential symptoms to be on the lookout for when it comes to TMJ disorder. The most commonly reported symptom is pain in the jaw; this pain is often concentrated to one side, but it can be present on both sides of the jaw. This pain may also be accompanied by a strange clicking or popping sound in the jaw, especially when the mouth is opened wide or when chewing. Some patients also suffer from lockjaw or even dislocation of the jaw as a result of TMJ disorder.
In some cases, those with TMJ disorder will also experience tinnitus, which is a condition that results in popping and ringing sounds in the ears. This can be a very distracting symptom to have. This, in addition to a feeling of fullness or temporary loss of hearing in one ear, is another common sign of a TMJ problem.
Typically, TMJ disorder must be diagnosed with an X-ray or even an MRI by your doctor. However, if you are experiencing any or all of these symptoms and believe you may be suffering from TMJ disorder, it’s worth scheduling an appointment with your doctor as soon as possible.
